Indigenous Health - Moving Forward
August 24, 2008 on 10:34 am“The Future of the Next Generation” Wednesday August 27th 2008
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have a life expectancy 17 years less than other Australians. Our generation can help change this inequality…
Pledge YOUR support for the Close the Gap Campaign and join us for a BBQ out the front of Medschool from 4-5.30pm.
Participate in an Interactive Cultural Dance Session with Torres Strait Islander Dancer Eddie Peters at 4.45pm or 5.15pm.
Be prepared for a line up of exceptional Speakers, in the Florey Lecture Theatre from 5.30pm.
Amanda Richards, Dr Anthea Krieg and Dr David Scrimgeour will present different perspectives from the forefront of action and change that is imperative in Closing the Gap. They will address what has been done, what can be done and the changes that should be made.
Amanda Richards will be providing her personal perspective as an Indigenous Medical Student and will be drawing on her experiences in working with Communities in the APY Lands, Massai Land in Kenya and her Adnyamathanha Community, Nepabunna in the Flinders Ranges
Amanda is a dynamic and active spokesperson for Indigenous Issues, that has captured audiences at the AIDA Annual Symposium and on ABC Radio, and recently attended the Pacific Region Indigenous Doctors Congress in Hawaii.
Dr Anthea Krieg has had a long standing involvement with all aspects of Indigenous Health. She has worked extensively at Nunkuwarrin Yunti and, specifically, on mental health, particularly of Indigenous men exiting the Adelaide Remand Centre. She is also a prolific author of articles published in the Medical Journal of Australia
It is impossible to match the passion and dedication of Anthea in her field of work. She is a fiery speaker that will ignite the activist flame within.
Dr. David Scrimgeour has over thirty years experience in both remote and urban Aboriginal health. As lecturer and co-ordinator of Aboriginal health policy studies, he commands a great degree of influence over Aboriginal Health Policy, and he often presents radical action plans for making the necessary change. His frank and critical approach will impart a great depth of knowledge and insight that is bound to dispel cynicism over the challenges of Indigenous Inequality.
