Adelaide University Medical Orchestra

Established in 2008, The Adelaide University Medical Orchestra is the world’s first single faculty Medical Student Orchestra. With a great level of enthusiasm and immense musi¬cal talent within the medical school, the prospect of forming their own Orchestra was an idea they could bring to reality.
The music program has expanded to incorporate over 100 medical students – comprising an orchestra, stage band, vocal ensemble and dance crew. AUMO has provided an opportunity for medical students to express themselves through creative arts, while sharing our music with the wider community and raising awareness and funds for medical charities that contribute to the wellbeing of others.

Through 2008, members of the Orchestra embraced the opportunity to share its music at various medical and charity functions, as well as a Christmas Project at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. In 2009, they will build upon their public performances and host their very own recital at Scott Theatre on May 24.

AUMO’s artistic style encompasses both classical masterpieces and contemporary works, along with innovative projects formed through arrangements and compositions by members of the Orchestra.
With so much to look forward to, stay tuned!

aumogenesis-logo.jpg

It all began with a love of music.
We have nurtured it, cherished it and watched it grow.
Finally, after 9 months of anticipation, we are ready to deliver.
On the 24th May 2009, witness the miracle of aumogenesis: the birth of sound.
Audiences will be propelled through a spectacle of awe and wonder, as we extend and redefine the boundaries of orchestral music. We will challenge and broaden both musicians’ and audience’s perspective of music through a unique and vivacious culmination of music and other facets of the creative arts.

AUMO’s Orchestra, Stage Band, Vocal Ensemble and Dance Crew will perform alongside our guest artist Staff Members from the Medical Faculty.
Definite highlights of the recital will include the World premiere of an Orchestral Hip Hop Arrangement, Coldplay’s Viva la vida, Super Mario Theme, Jazz impros, dazzling vocal pieces and Liszt’s Piano Concerto No.1.

Proceeds from the raffle and silent auction will support Insight’s sustainable projects; Net Attack and the Cambodia World Family.
Refreshments will be available during the interval.

Date: Sunday 24 May, 2009. Seated 6.45pm for 7pm start.
Venue: Scott Theatre, Elder Conservatorium at the University of Adelaide

Corporate Cup

E-mail Print PDF
Corporate Cup is a team event run each year for all levels of fitness by Life Be In It. Running for most of Semester 2, Corporate Cup is held every fortnight by the banks of the Torrens. Teams of 5-7 walk or run around a circuit of either 2.75km, 4.5km or 7km. Needless to say, the 7km run is not for the faint-hearted, while those of you not really into running can opt for a shorter walk or jog. Across the 16 weeks of competition, 8 times are recorded and tallied up. Mostly, the teams entered are made up of office groups from the CBD. The AMSS enters as many teams as necessary and there are generally a fair number of participants.

While the name ‘Corporate Cup’ might imply a competition, the focus is on not who runs or walks the fastest, it is on which team improves the most. To this end, each time the circuit is completed, any improvement on the first run is recorded and added up in a points system. Prizes are awarded in various categories for the most improved team, although the spirit of the competition is really more the promotion of health and fitness.

For those of you who like to get a bit more for your registration fee, you’ll be pleased to know that all entrants receive a free t-shirt, plus water and juice each time the run is done. In addition, the AMSS subsidises the registration fee, making it an even more attractive prospect.

The circuits are open on a Wednesday every fortnight between 6.30am and 5.30pm, which is very conveniently during a typical day at University. Most people complete their run in a break or after their last class – the start of the Torrens track is within walking distance of the Uni. This also means it’s easy to find a partner to run with. A quick walk or run with friends can be a great break in a busy week in the Medical School.

Corporate Cup is a great way to improve your fitness or just have a bit of fun with friends. It’s a great team event and there is a category for all abilities. There is absolutely no pressure to be the best or the fastest and you can do it completely at your own pace. Enter this year and improve your fitness while running around the prettiest track in Adelaide!

Sports Events

While much of the AMSS calendar is constructed of social events and educational forums, the sporting side of things provides a relaxed alternative to the likes of Med Ball and suturing workshops. Team sports such as Med Footy and Med Cricket are played annually between year levels, while those who want a more casual game can participate in Med Volleyball on the beach during Med Camp.

First semester hosts the summer sports of Med Cricket and Med Volleyball, while later on (to the great joy of most medical students) we are given the day off to play Med Footy. Each year, the new first years are occupied on the second day of Med Camp with a very unofficial game of Med Volleyball down at the beach. If you don’t mind getting a little sandy, this is a great way to get to know some of the new people in the Medical School. Med Cricket is somewhat more hotly contested throughout the year levels and was last year also played between a Med All-Stars team and a Dentistry team. Med Footy is always an AMSS highlight and is great day of inter-year competition (including a pre-clinical vs clinical girls match). It is also known for its free barbecue and comfortable grandstand, meaning if you don’t play it is still well worth attending. Med Footy is a longstanding Medical School tradition and is one of the bigger events in the sporting calendar.

Traditionally, second semester has been the home of Med Soccer and the City to Bay Fun Run. Soccer has been a popular sport in the Medical School for some time now and while this is one of the newer sports to be added to the repertoire it has been no less popular than the cricket. While it may be on sabbatical in 2009, it is likely to return in later years. The City to Bay is the one sports event each year when we combine forces with the Flinders medical students. Entries are made to walk or run 12 or 6 kilometres and (specific to the med students) there is a bed push category. This is probably the more difficult of the categories – enter only if you are confident enough in your fitness to push a hospital gurney at high speeds for 12 km. Participation in the City Bay each year aims to raise money for a chosen charity. Look forward this year to Med Netball, making a comeback in ’09. If you don’t enjoy AFL and you’re bamboozled by cricket, Med Netball may just be the sport for you. This will be the day for the ladies to dominate (although male participation is encouraged) and will hopefully spark a tradition for many years to come.
