Exec Nominations

President
Sam LaBroome
I was going to write a haiku, but thought that might be a bit corny. It probably would have had a lot of “ity” words: community, accessibility etc etc. See. Corny. But seriously, if elected my biggest hope for the 2010 AMSS Exec/Committee/Membership as a whole is to continue the vibrancy of the society, and ensure that all members enjoy their time at Med School. That is why the society exists. I think a president who truly believes in the goals of the society, and to be honest, just loves it, is imperative for this to occur, and it is something I think I embody. I would relish (not the spreadable kind) the opportunity to work with a team of dedicated people to build on the hard work done in previous years, and continue to evolve and grow the many events and services offered by the society to its members.

Despina Papps
I have great passion for the AMSS, and with my extensive committee experience, I would relish the opportunity to lead our society as President. I have developed a broad yet intimate understanding of the workings of the society through my roles as first-year social representative, MedCamp convenor and Secretary. In particular, my Executive position as Secretary this year has been one that has required meticulous organisation and dedication. It has provided me with insight into the important issues regarding the AMSS and has given me an appreciation of what the role of presidency entails. Most importantly, however, I have loved being part of the AMSS – both as an avid event attendee and as a working member of the committee and the Executive. I believe that I am well-equipped to undertake presidency, and direct future growth of the AMSS. I would be honoured if I were granted this privilege in 2010.

Vice-President
Sam Ellison
Through the role of preclinical coordinator this year, I’ve been involved in all facets of the AMSS, and feel that this has given me enough experience to carry into the role of Vice President. Over the past 3 years, I’ve been heavily involved with the AMSS, being elected social rep and med camp helper in 2008. These positions have allowed me the opportunity to get to know students across all years of the medical school. If elected, I intend to make the AMSS, in particular the meetings, more open and accessible to all its members. I would also like to see the health and wellbeing arm develop and grow in 2010. I am an enthusiastic and hardworking person with fresh ideas which I believe will make me a valuable member of the AMSS for 2010.

Secretary
Melissa Whalan
I would love to contribute back to the society by taking the position of secretary. I believe I would be a respectful representative of the medical students, and am approachable to both the younger and older years. I have been a keen participant in social and educational events, always willing to help out in all areas, including roles such as ticket sales. I was proudly involved in the construction of the ‘AdeLadies’ pockets, which involved large amounts of liaisons between students. I have developed organizational skills and excellence in time management. I am a hard worker and believe I could manage the responsibilities of fourth year and an executive position. I enjoy working as part of a team, and am not afraid to make hard decisions. I would be excited to be a fresh face on the team, bringing three years of being a keen society witness.

Cheryl Ou Yong
Whatever it comes to, the AMSS committee next year already looks like it will be fantastic. I’m here to learn and to partake in a society that constantly grows and gives. I feel that I am ready to step up to and play my part in the role of Secretary. This year, I was Third Year Education Representative and we looked into strengthening the clinical curriculum at the RAH and demystifying the Practical Exam. I like a no-nonsense approach to things, but the converse can also be fun. I relish the challenge to get things out on time, think computer documents should always be aesthetic and I can type close to 100 words a minute. My family is interstate, so free time is my own time (more work and more events!) My previous experience includes Insight Memberships Officer (2009), Insight Curriculum Officer and AURHA Rouseabout Co-Editor with Dezi (both 2008).

Sponsorship Officer
Chris Harry
Sponsorship Officer is a critical part of the AMSS executive, working with the various sponsors of the AMSS and also liaising with events organisers in regard to sponsorship. This role requires a diverse range of skills from being able to effectively communicate with business groups to being extremely organised and motivated with all of the requirements of the role. I believe I possess the attributes necessary to carry out the tasks of sponsorship officer. I also have the drive to be able to engage and develop the position further, to consolidate sponsorship as one of the major funding arms of the organisation and ensure financial stability well into the future. I am looking forward to the potential opportunity to expand the exposure of current and future sponsors, and to become involved with the day-to-day running of the society.

Giri Krishnan
I see the crux of the sponsorship position as being responsible for maintaining the financial stability of the AMSS. I think this will involve close correspondence with our major partners, and firm awareness of the memoranda of understanding. I think I have the work ethic and the organisational, creative and people skills to be successful in fulfilling this role. If elected I would make my priority to maintain and strengthen our relationship with current sponsors as well as to get more sponsors on board. I would develop the sponsorship prospectus further. I would organise a central sponsorship team that could help with sponsorship for individual events. As a member of the executive, I would relish the opportunity to be closely involved in the running of the society. I think I have the team skills and the passion to support other committee members and make a positive contribution to the society.

Candice Houda
Vastly important, the Sponsorship Officer, fuels the social, cultural and educational support our successful society provides. It would be an honour to undertake this role, and my bubbling, outgoing nature, strong leadership skills and interest in business will enable me to maintain the current portfolio, whilst securing another major partner. Being part of publications, functions and sport within college and also a past Skullduggery Convenor I’m very excited to work with these AMSS teams to secure sponsorship, and believe I have the understanding, skills, passion and the flexibility with honours to fulfil these goals. As president of Lincoln College I bring a vast and unique range of skills and experiences to further assist the development of the AMSS coupled with excitement, a strong spirit and sense of fun to re-engage its members. I can’t wait to throw myself into the AMSS, whilst concurrently develop my own skills for future involvement.

Timothy Ganguly
I believe that I am well suited to the role or Sponsorship Officer for multiple reasons. I believe that I have the personality and personal skills that would enable me to effectively liaise with our major sponsors and maintain our current sponsorship agreements. I have a wealth of experience at interacting with companies on a professional basis through my experience as one of the 2009 Functions Coordinators and through my private business as an event organiser and coordinator. Finally, the experience I have gained through working as a customer service manager for a major department store has helped me develop and mature my skills in diplomacy and negotiation; both of which are paramount when dealing with business sponsorship. This position will provide me with many opportunities to expand our current portfolio to encompass our major social events, specifically Medball, and look to increase sponsorship of education.

Treasurer
Sarah Middleton
Factors that I see as important in the Treasurer's role for 2010 include strict book keeping - particularly now that we are registered for GST; promoting structure and continuity in the financing of AMSS events; working closely with AFIT and the Adelaide Medical Students’ Foundation; continuing to utilise the online payment system; and maintaining transparency of the AMSS finances to the committee. My continual involvement with the committee throughout Med School has given me an understanding of how the society works and prepared me for an executive position. Plus being in 6th year, without the stress of study or exams, will give me plenty of time to spend on this portfolio. My previous experience as a Skullduggery and Functions Convenor, two of the biggest money turnovers for the AMSS, leaves me capable of managing both the AMSS finances as a whole and of assisting other committee members with event organisation.

Membership & Benefits Officer
John Tillett
This is a portfolio where I have clear goals, particularly to increase AMSS membership among those in clinical years who aren’t always embracing it. Gouger Street is home to a large number of students, particularly international students. It would be here that I would extend the “membership benefits” map, with the goal of engaging international students and clinical students using this area regularly. I would also work with the clinical coordinator to make the clinical welcome well attended. Our membership utilise the most outstanding benefits offered by the AMSS the most. I would seek to increase the quality and uptake, rather than just quantity of membership benefits in Rundle Street and North Adelaide. I’d particularly seek a store that could offer a strong discount on practical hospital clothing. Finally, with experience in event organization for the last two years (which I’ve loved), President’s Keg would be in capable hands.

Georgie Hanus
I see the MBO as a vital link between AMSS members, the committee and external AMSS supporters. The MBO should be an approachable and motivated AMSS member, and a committed representative of the society… all of which I am! My enthusiastic personality would be an asset to the initial membership drive, as well as building interest and involvement in the society throughout the year. Next year, I’d like to see more substantial benefits in practical and useful areas, and to build our rural membership base with rural-specific benefits. I’d love to maintain members’ interest and involvement throughout the year, with another membership drive and Oweek-style benefits and events in second semester. Having spoken at length with current and past exec members about MBO, I’m really keen to take on the role – to refine our benefits, build our membership base and get members excited and involved throughout 2010!

Committee Nominations

Clinical Coordinator
Sarah Middleton
As Clinical Coordinator I’d like to organise a clinical pub crawl, assess what can be done to sort out the lockers in Eleanor Harrald Building and do all I can to ensure that clinical students don’t become anti-social! Being in 6th year will give me enough free time to be able to achieve a lot with this role, while my past experience with organising AMSS functions would be an asset to the position.

AMA(SA) Rep
Tony Farfus
The role of AMA rep is to act as a bridge between our life as students and our future career as doctors. This can best be served by an experienced, senior member of the AMSS. Coming into my 6th year of med-school, I feel that I could fulfil this role to its maximum potential. My main goals are to expand the influence and awareness of the AMA in medical student life.

Edward Gibson
I have a real passion for the issues that medical students and the medical profession face, now and in the future. As many medical bodies struggle with relevancy to their constituents, I think there is a real opportunity to re invent this role and bring it back to a student level to improve participation.

Publications Officers
Alice Fitzgerald (III), Katherine Watson (III)
[Stimulus] has evolved into something bold, witty, and a bit politically incorrect. (Just like us). It’s been said that “[stimulus] 2009 was amazing”. We agree - and we want in! We may not be able to execute the same metamorphosis as Sam and Ken, but we can promise to capture the essence of the AMSS in a way that hasn’t been done before. Love, Kat Watson BA (Raconteuring) and Alice Fitzgerald Applied Dip. (Patchwork Quilting).

Sports Officers
Simon Jackson & Matt Hauser
We were previously the Sports Officers in 2008 before heading to the country this year.  Next year in 6th year we will have plenty of time to further develop sports & healthy well-being in the AMSS. We plan to increase involvement of sports & health related activities to a wider range of people. Having previously held the position & been involved in college sports, we have a thorough understanding of what the role requires.

Junior Education Coordinator
Karthik Venkataraman
I would like to run for Junior Education Coordinator  because education is something I am very passionate about. This year, I was one of the education reps for my year level and was able experience the workings of Team Education and their relationship with the faculty. I was also able to assist the current JEC. I was also fortunate enough to run Med transit, a med school transition program for 1st years, fairly successfully.

Caroline Wells
Let’s put the propagation back into education. Interpret as you will… but my point is the Med School is teeming with knowledge and learning experiences, the question is how to tap into and propagate it. Following on from being an Ed Rep this year, my plans are to continue the success of ClinPrac and the Yr 1 Mock Resource Exam, plus improve lecture note display on the MLTU website and educational support of first years.

Yudhish Shakespeare
Having moved to Adelaide from Canberra this year I have relished my role as Year 1 Education Representative. I've enjoyed the opportunity to represent my year at a curriculum level and believe my relationship with my peers and the MLTU staff will allow me to have a meaningful impact on future educational developments in the Medical School. I also know my personal skills can be utilized in assisting first years in their academic transition into... (trimmed to 75 words, pending an updated & shorter version)

AMSA Junior Representative
Joseph Overland
I am extremely enthusiastic about representing the University of Adelaide at a national level. Having learnt a lot from my experiences with the AMSS, I feel that I would be a good candidate and bring a new perspective to current medico-legal issues facing medical students in Australia. I would also bring a passion for teamwork to the working relationship with the AMSA senior representative.

Lachlan McMichael
I am excited about the prospect of being involved with AMSA and I will bring the necessary drive and intuitive to enact AMSA’s motto, “connect, inform and represent”. I've had previous AMSA experience, through my involvement with the AMSA Adelaide “AdFAB” 2009 executive bid, and also have a keen interest in medico-politics. I hope in 2010 to assist the senior AMSA representative whilst also developing the SALDW, AMSA blood drive and AMSS AMSA subcommittee.

Yudhish Shakespeare
As a first year student in 2009 I have shown my ability to converse with a large variety of medical students across many year levels. In my role as education representative I have also shown my enthusiasm for the educational and other medically orientated issued faced by medical students. Thus I feel I have both the personal skills and the keen interest to have an active role in both the AMSS and AMSA as the... (trimmed to 75 words, pending an updated & shorter version)

AMSA Senior Representative
Edward Gibson
I love amsa and all things amsa. I am keen to be apart of advocacing for med students and improving the Adelaide medical students understanding of what AMSA is and does for them. I believe I have the passion and drive needed to get the most out of this role.

Victoria Cox
I have relished the opportunity to embrace the political, educational and social aspects of AMSA over the past year as the Junior AMSA Representative. My involvement at AMSA Council, NLDS, Convention, GHC and various advoacacy roles in the SA Health Care system have given me broad experience for this role. My passion and excitement will ensure effective representation of Adelaide medical students at both a state and national level.

Men’s Officer
Samuel Fitzgerald
I feel that I would be an excellent candidate for men’s officer as I am an easily approachable guy who is always keen for a chat and happy to help anyone who asks.  I am a keen and active member in the AMSS helping with as many events and activities as possible.  Additionally I have prior experience managing an AMSS events being an EOTP convener in 2008.

Women’s Officer
Melissa Whalan
I would love to represent the females of the AMSS at the meetings. My goal for this position would be to establish support between the girls across the years, and to see the traditional division between preclinical and clinical girls broken down. I would provide a point of contact for the girls and be a friendly and approachable figure. I am keen to continue on the ‘AdeLadies’ pocket, which I played a part in constructing.

Theone Papps
If given the chance, I would be dedicated to organising a fantastic Miss Med event, drawing on my experience as Social Representative and End of Term Party convenor. In addition, I believe my approachable nature and enthusiasm would be fitting because I see the role of Women’s Officer as not only an event convenor, but as a year-long role of offering support, building relationships and bringing students together, which I would aim to do!

Photographer
Timothy Ganguly
As Photographer I aim to continue the good work of my predecessors by providing an accurate record of our major events.  I own extensive DSLR equipment and have attended several photography workshops over the last few years.  I have entered photos into several local competitions (including Insight for 2009), and won several highly commended awards.  In 2010 I want to see the return of photo albums on our website and would look to include DVDs...
