Adelaide University Psychiatry Association

The Adelaide University Psychiatry Association (AUPA) was established in the Adelaide Medical School in 2007 by a group of medical students who were keen to promote professional education in psychiatry and allied fields and to raise student awareness of some of the issues in mental health.

Since then AUPA has continued its work as a catalyst for the learning of those interested in the field of psychiatry. The association seeks the participation of students and is a resource for students interested in the field of psychiatry.

In addition to being a resource for students, AUPA aims to promote psychiatry amongst the student community by hosting such events as the ‘AUPA Lectures’ each year. These lectures are an opportunity to have experienced practioners speak to the students on a topic of interest, enabling students to benefit from their expertise. In the past these lecture topics have ranged from forensic psychiatry to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

The fight for global health equity is a passionate, growing movement amongst students Australia-wide. Insight, a member of the Australia Medical Students’ Association’s Global Health Network, is one of Australia’s leading student-run global health organisations and puts students in the picture.

Insight was founded in 2004, after two medical students went to India on elective, and became inspired to generate change. As the global health group of the University of Adelaide, we aim to educate, inspire and empower students to get involved in making a real contribution to the global village.

Whilst health is our primary focus, we firmly believe that the basis of health is multifactorial, and is affected by global inequalities, injustice and poverty. They therefore require a multidisciplinary problem-solving approach. This is reflected in the varied backgrounds of both our committee and our membership, which include allied health professionals, engineers, educators, lawyers and media representatives.

We aim to assist individuals who have an interest in global health, increase awareness on the myriad of issues surrounding health around the globe and provide the tools to enable people to get involved; from fundraisers and seminars through to medical aid supply and assistance.

In our short (but exciting) history, Insight has:
• raised awareness on the big issues affecting our world with debates, forums and workshops
• assembled over 5000 birthing kits to help provide a clean birth and thereby reduce maternal and infant mortality
• raised funds for insect repellent treated mosquito nets for villages in Papua New Guinea, thus preventing the spread of malaria
• supported community-based projects around the world, including the most recent ones in Cambodia and Burma
• assisted individuals with obtaining equipment and supplies for use in developing communities
• helped organise medical student placements to allow medical students to make a difference to lives and do their part in the fight against poverty, disease and injustice.

As of 2009, Insight has over 800 student members and over 100 professionals who receive monthly newsletter regarding new and continuing projects and upcoming events.

Insight can help you see the big picture... and show how you can be a part of the solution.
